Nigeria · Application email planning

Give receipts, alerts and offers their own purpose.

Receipts and promotions need different recipient decisions. This guide helps a team serving Nigeria document each message purpose, remove accidental promotional additions and prepare the appropriate sending workflow.

Classify the content the recipient will actually see

Begin with the triggering event. A receipt explains a completed transaction. A service alert explains a relevant account or service event and required action. A promotion encourages an optional purchase or marketing action. Review the actual subject, body and links rather than the template name.

A sales banner in a receipt adds a marketing question. Keep essential service content focused and prepare offers separately for supported audiences. This practical rule does not legally classify every mixed-purpose email.

PurposePrimary questionExample to review
ReceiptWhat completed transaction does this confirm?A clear confirmation and a secure way to view the record
Service alertWhat relevant change or action must this recipient know?A specific service interruption or account update
PromotionWhat optional commercial action are we encouraging?A new offer sent to the relevant marketing subscribers
Mixed or unclearCan the essential information stand on its own?Remove optional offer content or hold for a fuller review

Write a recipient rule for every message

For a receipt, identify the specific transaction and the expected recipient. For an alert, define who is affected by the service event and exclude unaffected accounts. For a promotion, use documented marketing permission appropriate to the message and honour withdrawals and exclusions. A person’s use of your service should not silently activate every promotional sequence.

Keep purpose separate from delivery status: delivery does not establish permission. Define how a marketing unsubscribe affects promotional selection and separately assess necessary service messages. Document those rules in your application and preparation process, then test actual behaviour with synthetic records.

  • State the triggering event and the audience scope in the template brief.
  • Record the permission or other reviewed basis appropriate to the intended purpose in your authorised system.
  • Keep promotional suppression and necessary service-message decisions understandable to the reviewer.
  • Hold mixed-purpose templates until their content and recipient rules are resolved.

Three illustrative briefs for a product team

Message-purpose examples using no real customer data
RECEIPT
Trigger: A completed, verified transaction.
Subject: Your receipt is ready
Body: Confirm the transaction in a minimal, accurate summary.
Action: View the receipt in the authenticated account.
Exclude: Sales banners, unrelated recommendations and private payment details.

SERVICE ALERT
Trigger: A verified change affecting a defined set of accounts.
Subject: An update about your service
Body: Explain the impact, relevant timing and what happens next.
Action: View the current service information or contact support.
Exclude: Unaffected recipients and optional offers.

PROMOTION
Trigger: A reviewed campaign for the relevant subscribed audience.
Subject: A clear description of the actual offer
Body: Explain the offer and genuine conditions without invented urgency.
Action: View the offer.
Include: Sender identity and the appropriate marketing preference or unsubscribe route.

Choose the application connection after the purpose

Use the HTTP API for backend messages, identifiers and delivery events. Use a documented idempotency key when retrying the same request to help prevent duplicate sends. Keep secrets on the backend and personal data out of ordinary debug logs.

Compatible applications can use smtp.sendmailos.com with STARTTLS on 2525 or implicit TLS on 2465 and a sending-only credential. SMTP attachments are not currently supported. For a receipt document, assess a secure authenticated destination and current product capabilities instead of assuming attachment support.

Test purpose, recipients and delivery separately

  1. Review content

Check the subject, facts, sender identity, links and the boundary between necessary information and optional marketing. Use synthetic orders or accounts for review.

  2. Review selection

Check that the trigger selects only the intended recipients and that promotional exclusions are honoured. Inspect cancelled, duplicate and already-processed events.

  3. Review the actual route

Verify the sending domain and selected hosted, connected-server or hybrid route. Check the delivery result; API or SMTP acceptance alone does not mean inbox placement.

  4. Keep the local review current

Nigeria’s NDPC publishes the Data Protection Act guidance and GAID resources. Arrange the relevant local review for your actual processing. This purpose planner does not establish complete Nigerian legal compliance.

This worksheet stays in your browser and is not sent to SendMailOS. Use general planning notes; avoid personal data, recipient lists, passwords and API keys.

Questions & answers

Is an email transactional because the template is called a receipt?

The label alone is insufficient for this review. Inspect the trigger, actual content, recipient rule and purpose. An offer added to a receipt creates an additional marketing question. Keep a focused service version and review the promotion separately.

Can application email use my connected sending server?

Delivery follows the route configured for the selected sending domain. Actual connected-server sends do not use hosted credits; hosted delivery uses the plan allowance. Check the route and fallback behaviour before relying on it for a particular application message.

Does this planner confirm compliance with Nigeria’s data protection rules?

No. It records a message-purpose decision. Legal basis, notices, rights handling, security, retention and transfers need review for your organisation. Completing the page does not send or authorise email.
